Patrolling Slateport Beach at night was easier now that Splashfest had concluded.

Carracosta mating season had resulted in roped-off nests on the beach, meant to ward any tourists away from bothering the sand-buried eggs as much as to keep any curious Pokémon away. However, it did very little to keep away the smaller Pokémon like Krabby and Wingull, and Talia kept her eyes peeled in the night for any such predators.

Precious little light offered visibility; fears of distracting the turtles when they hatched had resulted in Talia bringing her Noibat, which relied on sound to guide it in the dark. Its large, velvety ears took in every sound on the night air, while the blue-haired woman took a moment to look around at the quiet, secluded beach.

"I've never seen Carracosta eggs hatch before," she said to her companion, turning to him with a curious glint in her topaz eyes. "Have you?"

There is a familiarity to Slateport beach that results in a certain sense of comfort when walking upon its sands, even when sunlight has faded into the dark of the night and the waters appear of an inky black. He has worked by the bay for years, he runs by the water just about every afternoon, he knows this beach better than he knows most of Hoenn.

”You haven't? Hmm… I have seen them a few times, mostly back when I first transferred to Hoenn.” Distant memories of his days as a cadet come to mind with Talia Celes’s question. Days before he spent most of his time in Slateport.

Sky blue eyes wander over their surroundings, falling upon the Castform that now floats ahead of them – a pokémon that had been his companion even back then.

”It’s rare for them to choose beaches as crowded as Slateport’s... I guess the dome has to do with that.” Tam admits then, calm as ever. The dome around the region has affected Hoenn in many more ways than what most people understand. Rangers, though… Rangers have had to deal with it for months now.

"That is one small mercy, no? That the dome has helped the wildlife, at least, in some way. It is so easy to focus on the bad, when there is good to be had always, too."

The silver lining brought a glimmer of a smile to Talia's lips as she watched the Castform move ahead of them both. There was something comforting in the sight of the spherical Pokémon looking over the eggs, guarding the beach at a distance.

Overhead, her own Dragonair wound through the inky nightscape as her luminous eyes scoured the beach, starlight flashing off her scales to wink with white light.

Her own topaz eyes dimmed somewhat with thought, considering the sight of the nest in front of them. "I wonder how everything will change when the barrier lifts, though."

If anything perhaps wanted to enter, that had been denied entry for some time.

Or if anything wanted to escape, that had been trapped inside for too long. People included, she supposed.

Is it some sort of mercy? A silver lining? Tam considers Talia’s words carefully, because to him most events are exactly that: events. Never only good, never only bad, just things that happen and alter his life. Things due to which he must adapt.

”Hmm… Guess so.” It’s slightly that he shrugs. ”When the eggs are in places like Slateport beach it’s easier for us to find them, monitor them, and protect them. It also means dealing with people like civilians and even poachers knowing they’re there, though.”

Yet, when his gaze falls upon the sands, he goes quiet, noticing the slight shifting. For Talia’s sake, he nods in that direction.

”Look.” A small Tirtouga begins to poke its head out of the sand, doing its best to break free and head towards the ocean. ”The barrier has disturbed a lot of migration patterns, so there’s that. For us, right now, it means dealing with a lot more predators than usual… Keep an eye out.”

Leave it to Tam to answer her question only in the way that's pertinent to their current situation.

Talia's own idealism wasn't swayed by the objective practicality of her captain, though this was in part due to her not quite realizing this distinction between them.

"That's true," Talia conceded, turning her gaze to the Tirtouga he indicated on the sand. "We'll have to be on alert, won't we?"

Her own temperament was pleasant and easygoing when it came to casual encounters like this one, causing her to sway on the balls of her feet as she contemplated his statement. However, this didn't mean she was taking their job casually -- far from it. She was attuned to the patrol of her Noibat as they stood on the beach, awaiting any invaders that might interrupt their conversation.

At present, nothing seemed intent on doing so, and Talia decided to change the topic to something more neutral. She indicated her Dragonair and Noibat with a nod, saying, "Lyra and Pazuzu should be able to notice if we receive any unexpected visitors."

She tilted her head at the Castform, curious.

"Does your Castform have a name, actually?"

She couldn't recall him giving one.

Is that not why they’re here? Sometimes people make comments that seem way too obvious to Tam, especially considering that in this case, being alert is exactly their task. He has learned, however, that nothing productive tends to come out of pointing this much out to others, and since he cares little for pointless discussions, Tam does as Tam does best and remains quiet.

He allows the sound of the waves to wash away all thoughts concerning anything other than the Tirtouga, and when he does so, he also takes no of the ceaseless cries of the Wingull – so often dismissed due to spending so much time by the sea.

”Castform.” It serves both as a response to Talia’s question and a way to call to the Weather Pokémon’s attention. He nods upwards, silently commanding the Castform to go deal with the flock of birds and keep them away from the Tirtouga. His command is immediately followed.

”I don’t usually name my pokémon.” He admits, watching it go higher. It’s only once sure that the Castform can take care of the Wingull that he looks at the sands once more. ”...I don’t think any names I come up with really fit them.”
